About the Business

Established in 1997, Markes International is a global manufacturer and supplier of specialist
analytical instrumentation, accessories, supplies, and consumables that enhance the
sensitivity and application scope of GC–MS. Their products help analysts worldwide detect
trace-level volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs) in solids, liquids,
and gases.

Markes International employs over 180 people worldwide, with the majority based in the UK,
and additional teams operating across the USA, Germany, Canada, China, Malaysia, and
Singapore.

Challenge

Markes International operates a 9-day fortnight, but their previous time & attendance (T&A)
provider could not support an hourly annual leave system. This resulted in significant admin
burdens, as HR had to manually track hours. The system also lacked visibility, making it harder
for managers to know when their team members were on-site or on leave (annual, flexi, etc.).

Additionally, the legacy system had become overly complex due to multiple bolt-on features. It
tried to do everything but did nothing particularly well. It also lacked mobile functionality, which
was critical for production staff who don’t regularly use PCs. Integration with their existing
Paxton Net2 security system was also missing, leading to frequent missed or inaccurate clockins. Legislative requirements for the team in the US meant that a monthly annual leave accrual
was a necessity for us, which could not be supported through our previous T&A system.

The Solution

To address these issues, Markes International implemented RotaOne, prioritising:

We have found a workable solution for the US team leave accrual, and RotaOne is capable of
managing this with administrative input and manual maintenance.
